Alan Morrison, Director of Music and Organist

Music at First Baptist Church has always been known for its excellence.  We offer a wide range of music during Sunday and Wednesday services.  You can expect to hear classical, gospel, traditional and contemporary styles within the context of our worship services.

The First Baptist Church Choir is made up of volunteers with a nucleus of professional singers.  They sing for weekly services from September through May and the first Sunday of each month throughout the summer months.

Our soloists have always been a strong force in the Philadelphia music scene, most of them coming from The Curtis Institute of Music and The Academy of Vocal Arts.  They provide dynamic offerings weekly during worship services.  Soloists from the last two decades include acclaimed singers Kamel Boutros, Rebecca Carr, Ellie Dehn, Stuart Neill, Rinat Shaham, Indra Thomas, Todd Thomas, Richard Troxell, all of whom have sung at either The Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall, or both.  Some have also been heard in leading roles at La Scala, Covent Garden, La Fenice, etc…

Our current roster of talented soloists who all maintain active national/international careers includes:
Rebecca Carr & Mary Elizabeth Williams, sopranos
Katy Pracht, mezzo soprano
Sid Misra, tenor
Reginald Pindell, baritone

Our Musician Laureate is the incomparable Winifred Dettore Swift who served as soprano soloist for 30 years not only for the Sunday services but for The Philadelphia Oratorio Choir, singing all of the major oratorios on an almost weekly basis from September through May.

Karen Whitney is a regular presence as organist/pianist/director when Alan Morrison is away.
